Referendum in Krakow settled. Miszalski cancelled, City Council stays

The Municipal Referendum Commission gave the official results of the municipal referendum held on 24 May 2026.

Official results:

  • Attendance on the appeal of President Alexander Miszalski: 29,99%Referendum isimportant. The President's appeal was supported by a overwhelming majority of voters.
  • Attendance on the cancellation of the City Council of Krakow: 29,97%Referendum isnever mind(the required threshold has not been reached). City Councilstayson the basis of the previous rules.

The result means thatAleksander Miszalski loses office as President of Krakow, while the Krakow City Council retains its mandates.

What's next?

Pursuant to the Municipal Government Act,90 daysfrom the date of the referendum must be carried outEarly electionsfor President Krakow. Elections for councillors will not be needed because the council has not been cancelled.

Commissioner Electoral has already begun preparations for presidential elections. The most likely term isAugust or early September 2026.

The city is entering a transitional period. Until the election of the new President, the duties of the Commissioner appointed by the Prime Minister will be exercised.

This is a historic moment for Krakow – for the first time in the post-war history of the city, residents effectively cancelled the President in a referendum.
