In July 2025, Ognica in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship became the site of a widely reported and shocking case of cruelty to an animal. The case provoked a broad public reaction, and a video of the incident spread across social media, triggering a wave of protests and reports to the police.
He threw the dog onto the pavement. A camera captured everything
A 29-year-old resident of Gryfino County was caught on film during an act of violence against a dog. The man approached the lying animal, grabbed it and threw it onto the asphalt surface of the road. The video of the incident quickly went viral, provoking widespread outrage and pressure for an immediate response from the authorities.
After the Gryfino District Police Headquarters received the report and secured the video evidence, the 29-year-old was arrested. The prosecutor charged him with cruelty to an animal involving particular cruelty. In connection with the act, the man was placed under police supervision and banned from acquiring and keeping domestic animals for the duration of the proceedings. The law provides for a penalty of up to 5 years’ imprisonment in this case.
According to information provided by the Lower Silesian Animal Protection Inspectorate, the dog had an owner and, fortunately, did not suffer lasting physical injuries, although the animal was left in serious shock and distress.
2025 has also been a time of intensive work on further amendments to the Animal Protection Act, with plans to tighten sanctions and make their enforcement more effective. Social organizations stress, however, that education is needed alongside penalties to prevent such cases in the future.
