Military searches for unidentified object south of Lublin

The Operational Command of the Armed Forces (DORSZ) reported on Sunday, 18 October, a suspected violation of Polish airspace by an unidentified object. A search for its possible crash site is under way south of Lublin, but at this stage the violation has not been confirmed.

DORSZ published the statement on X. According to the military, the incident "could have occurred last night", and actions have been taken to verify it.

Who is leading the search

A Ground Search and Rescue Team from the Territorial Defence Forces has been deployed south of Lublin. It is searching for a possible crash site of the object. The police and the Military Gendarmerie are also taking part in the operation.

What the services are to establish

According to DORSZ, the actions are meant to verify a registered radar signal and reports from local residents. The military wants to determine the nature of the potential object or confirm that the signal may have been caused by weather phenomena or meteorological anomalies. The command stresses that at this stage no violation of Polish airspace has been confirmed. Further information is to be released after the verification work is complete.

A night of RCB alerts

During the night from Saturday to Sunday, the Government Security Centre (RCB) sent residents of Lublin Voivodeship an alert about a Russian air attack on Ukraine. The message said that Polish aircraft were operating in Polish airspace.

Several dozen minutes later, the RCB announced the end of the attack and that there was no threat on Polish territory.

The military does not link the search near Lublin with the attack on Ukraine in its statement. We have written about similar drone incidents before, in the violation of Polish airspace on 9-10 September 2025, but the current incident has not so far been classified as a violation.

What this means

Residents in the area south of Lublin may notice patrols by the military, police and gendarmerie. If someone finds an unusual object or debris, they should not touch it but call the emergency number 112. As of publication, the military has not said whether the object has been found or what its nature was.
