Second year running – a senior's walk as a lifeline from four walls
Many seniors in Kołobrzeg struggle every day with architectural barriers, which prevents them from going outside on their own. Rescuers from the Paramedic association organise free walks for older people and those with disabilities from September to the end of October. They often carry seniors down stairs, using specialist equipment such as cardiac chairs or wheelchairs.
Rescuers from Kołobrzeg have launched again with an unusual initiative – “Golden Senior Walk”, helping older people get out of their homes and enjoy fresh air. This is already the second edition of the initiative, which has been met with great appreciation from the local community and the media.
How does the Golden Senior Walk work?
The Paramedic group operates as a volunteer service – all you need to do is call a simple phone number to request a walk. Rescuers arrive at the indicated address, helping to safely leave the flat and return after the walk. Such help allows seniors not only to spend time in the fresh air, but also improves their mental and physical well-being.
We help people with disabilities and seniors who, because of architectural barriers, are trapped within their four walls. We drive to the indicated address, carry the senior down using a cardiac chair or wheelchair, and – after a walk with family or a carer – this person is carried back into the flat. – says Mateusz Giec, initiator of the initiative and secretary of the association
Who can take part?
- People over 60 years of age
- People with mobility impairments
- Seniors living in buildings without a lift or with difficult access to the outside
How does the walk work?
- Rescuers contact the person who made the request and agree on a date.
- Using the appropriate equipment, they help the older person leave the house.
- During the walk, a relative or carer accompanies the senior.
- After the walk, rescuers again help the senior return safely to the flat.
In recent years, the senior population in Kołobrzeg has been steadily growing – residents over 60 already make up 35 percent of the city’s population. The joint initiative not only helps break isolation, but also becomes a social response to the real needs of the ageing part of the community.
Residents stress that such an initiative should serve as a model for other towns. For many families, the Paramedic rescuers are real support and a relief from everyday duties. Seniors gain not only a moment outside the home, but also a sense that they are not left on their own.
