Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, who saw GTA 6 during a visit to Rockstar North, judges that the game is closer to “Red Dead Redemption 2” than to “GTA 5” in terms of tone and character relationships. The release is scheduled for November 19.
The material was published on Friday, October 16, in a Bloomberg newsletter. Schreier saw the game in Edinburgh as a demonstration, during which he did not play himself, so his conclusions are based on limited hands-on contact. Among others, Tech4Gamers describes them this way.
Jason and Lucia's Time Together
The biggest difference from “GTA 5” is said to be that the main characters also spend time together outside of story missions. In the previous game, Michael, Franklin and Trevor worked together on tasks, but during free exploration they usually acted separately.
According to GRYOnline.pl, which is based on Bloomberg’s text, Rob Nelson, one of the heads of Rockstar North, controlled Jason during the demo and called Lucia with a proposal to meet. The couple went for a walk in the park, then to the gym. They also visited a bank to assess whether it was worth robbing. They gave up because there were too many security guards.
Nelson reportedly called it a “completely new way of playing GTA”, with a second person, “if you want to”. According to GRYOnline.pl, Schreier wonders whether this feature will hold interest for many hours or turn out to be just a curiosity.
A Tone Closer to Rockstar's Western
The journalist sees similarities to “Red Dead Redemption 2” in the narrative and the character design. The story of Jason and Lucia seems more personal to him than the story of “GTA 5”. He admitted that after restarting the fifth game, he was already tired after an hour of the characters’ constant arguing. Jason and Lucia, on the other hand, give the impression of people who enjoy each other’s company.
According to Tech4Gamers, this does not mean giving up the series’ humor. The game is supposed to keep the madness known from “GTA 5”, but in a more down-to-earth setting. Schreier’s assessment is not an official announcement from Rockstar.
Background: Long Development and Release Date
The same series of Bloomberg materials also covers production behind the scenes. As outlets citing the text report, work on the game began in 2015 under the codename Project Americas. Initially it covered North and South America, but the scope was limited to Vice City and its surroundings. According to these reports, Rockstar’s headcount grew from 2,441 people at the RDR2 release to 4,711 in August 2026. The studio also reportedly assures that its next game will not take eight years to make.
The release of “GTA 6” on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S is scheduled for November 19, 2026. We wrote about the postponement and new date in our article on the GTA 6 release delay.
What It Means for Players
Just over four weeks remain until release. For now, this is the opinion of one journalist after a short demo, not a review. It is known that the game is set to offer shared exploration of two characters and a more balanced tone than “GTA 5”. It is not yet known how these ideas will hold up over dozens of hours of gameplay. The game will not be released on PC on launch day.
