The European Commission has fined the Temu platform a record 200 million euros. It is one of the highest penalties ever imposed on a Chinese e-commerce platform.
The fine was imposed under the Digital Services Act (DSA). According to the Commission, Temu failed to carry out an adequate risk assessment and did not restrict the sale of dangerous and illegal products in the European Union.
Main allegations against Temu:
- Lack of effective verification of the products sold,
- Allowing the sale of dangerous and illegal goods,
- Insufficient protection of consumers against counterfeits and products that do not meet EU standards,
- Inadequate response to reports of infringements.
The Commission stresses that consumer safety in Europe is paramount, and platforms such as Temu must take greater responsibility for what they offer to millions of Europeans.
Temu has 30 days to appeal the decision. So far, the Chinese platform has not issued an official statement on the matter.
This is another sign that the European Union is increasingly fighting cheap Chinese imports, which often bypass EU standards for safety, quality and consumer protection.
