A2 highway robbery in Calabria, Italy. Thieves stole about EUR 2 million in spectacular action

On 1 December 2025, about 6:30 a.m., on the A2 motorway between Scilla and Bagnara in Reggio Calabria Province, Italy, there was a brazen robbery on an armored van carrying money. A group of armed bandits, consisting of at least 10 people, blocked the road, torching cars and spreading nails, preventing the victim from escaping. As a result of the action, the thieves fled with a spoil estimated at about EUR 2 million. Fortunately, no one was injured even though shots were fired.

Event Details

The robbery took place in a tunnel on a section of the A2 motorway, also known as the Highway del Mediterraneo, connecting Salerno to Reggio Calabria. Bandits acted with precision worthy of action film: First they blocked traffic, parking several cars across the road and setting them on fire, causing chaos and preventing other vehicles from crossing. Additionally, they scattered nails on the road to pierce the tires of possible vehicles attempting to bypass the blockade. As Sicurtransport's armored van approached the ambush site, the attackers opened fire, forcing guards to surrender.

The guards, though armed, did not resist, fearing for their lives. Thiefs quickly took control of the vehicle, taking cash bags for banks and post offices in the region. The entire operation lasted only a few minutes, Then the attackers fled in an unknown direction, probably using pre-prepared escape vehicles. At the scene, firefighters intervened, who extinguished burning cars, and police, who secured the area and launched an investigation.

According to the preliminary findings, the loot consisted mainly of euro banknotes and was estimated at around 2 million. Police do not exclude ties to the local Ndrangheta Mafiawho has been controlling organised crime in Calabria for years. This is not the first such attack in the region – similar actions have taken place in the past, indicating the professionalism of the perpetrators.

Government and public response

The Italian authorities immediately initiated an investigation under the direction of the D.A. in Reggio Calabria. Shots and nail residue were found at the scene, confirming the way the bandits acted. The A2 motorway was closed for several hours, causing serious traffic jams and delays in traffic. Police are calling on witnesses to report any information that might help with the prosecution.

The incident has provoked outrage among Calabria residents who fear the rise of organized crime. Local media compare the robbery to scenes from Hollywood films, emphasizing its spectacular character. Sicurtransport, whose vehicle has been attacked, issued a statement in which it ensures cooperation with law enforcement authorities and stresses that employee safety is a priority.

This highway looks worse than the A4 section between Wrocław and Krzyżowa, which some call a freeway-like product.
