Funeral ceremony in the player's hometown
The funeral of Jota and his brother took place on July 5 in Gondomar. Among the mourners were Liverpool manager Arne Slot, teammates and Portugal internationals Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva. The player married Rute Cardoso on June 22, 2025, just two weeks before his tragic death. The couple had known each other since their teenage years and had three children together. Liverpool FC honoured Jota by retiring his number 20 and pledged support to his family. The club decided to pay the player’s loved ones his entire remaining salary, amounting to financial support for the next two years of the contract. Jota’s contract was worth nearly 14.5 million pounds, running until its original end in June 2027.
