In two days, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will meet in Anchorage, Alaska (USA), to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. The summit could shape Europe’s future and the global balance of power.
The aim of the meeting: can Trump stop the war?
On Friday, 15 August, US President Donald Trump will sit down for talks with Vladimir Putin. The main topic? Ending the conflict in Ukraine. Trump claims that “he needs two minutes to know Putin’s intentions” and stresses that the war would never have started had he been in power when the Russian invasion began. This time he has a chance to show how his diplomacy works face to face.
What is on Trump's agenda?
- “Listening” to Putin – the American administration is tempering expectations, calling the talks a “listening exercise”.
- One-on-one talks – a private session is planned, with only interpreters present.
- No Ukrainian participation – President Zelensky has not been invited.

- Historically it belonged to Russia – this choice stirs emotions in both countries.

Analogies to a game of poker are not made without reason – the stakes rise every day. On one hand, it may be possible to work out terms for peace. On the other, experts fear that a hasty deal could bring “benefits solely to Putin”, leaving Ukraine sidelined.

The Trump-Putin meeting in Anchorage is an event the whole world is watching. A trip to the land of reindeer may turn out to be a political gambit worthy of the 21st century. The final results will depend not only on the negotiations this Friday, but on the strategy Washington adopts in the months ahead. As in poker, what matters is not only the hand you hold, but also how you play it.

💬 The American side has just announced that an agreement has been reached to hold a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump next Friday, 15 August, in Alaska.
Russia and the United States are close neighbours, sharing a common border. That is why it makes sense for our delegation to simply cross the Bering Strait, and for such an important and anticipated meeting between the two leaders to take place in Alaska.
By the way, it is in Alaska and the Arctic that the economic interests of our countries converge, and prospects emerge for large-scale, mutually beneficial projects.
Still, the presidents will certainly focus on discussing ways to achieve a lasting solution to the crisis in Ukraine.
Looking ahead, we naturally expect the next meeting of the presidents to take place on Russian territory. An invitation in this regard has already been extended to the President of the United States.
