Law and Justice (PiS) leader Jarosław Kaczyński announced on Friday, 24 July 2026, that about 30 MPs had given up their party membership. He made the statement at PiS headquarters on Nowogrodzka Street in Warsaw. It marks the end of PiS in its current form and a reduction of more than 30 members of parliament.
„About 30 MPs from our formation have given up their membership. On Tuesday, the political committee will meet and take note of this fact,” Kaczyński said.
The decision follows an ultimatum that expired at midnight between 23 and 24 July. The party leadership required lawmakers to sign declarations of loyalty and to cease their activities in associations, including „Rozwój Plus” linked to Mateusz Morawiecki. Some 40 MPs, by estimates, did not sign the required documents.
Kaczyński stressed that the matter concerned not only the association but above all a proposal to split the party, which had been put forward several weeks earlier. „In this situation, we could not view the association as anything other than an element of a plan to split the party,” the party leader said. He added that the party had made far-reaching concessions, dropping its demand to dissolve the association and proposing only to freeze its activities until the elections, but the proposal was not accepted.
„Everyone knew what they were supposed to sign, and at the same time they saw what the consequences of not signing would be. They made the decision they made. Under no circumstances do we want to part ways in animosity, that is simply how things turned out,” Kaczyński said.
The announcement is the culmination of a long-running dispute within PiS between the party leader’s faction and the circle of former prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki. Formal acceptance of the resignations is due at the political committee meeting on Tuesday, 28 July.
Most likely, the group of MPs gathered around Mateusz Morawiecki and the Rozwój Plus association will now form a parliamentary club, and then, who knows, perhaps their own political party. Are we about to see a repeat of the history of parties founded by Zbigniew Ziobro or Szymon Hołownia? The coming political months will decide.
