Polish Sanitary Inspection warns of three Bell Polska salami types over Listeria

The Main Sanitary Inspectorate (GIS) issued a public warning on Monday, 19 October: the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes was detected in a batch of Bell Polska Salami musli 250 g. Two other types of salami from the same production day were also included in the recall.

Which products have been recalled

According to the GIS statement, as part of official controls by the Veterinary Inspection, Listeria monocytogenes was detected in 3 of 5 samples from one batch of the product Salami musli 250 g. Salami with pepper 250 g and Salami Mexican 250 g, produced on the same day, were also recalled.

The producer is Bell Polska Sp. z o.o., based at ul. Mokra 11 in Niepołomice (veterinary identification number of the plant: 12190301). All three products carry batch number 11061. They differ in their best-before dates:

  • Salami musli 250 g – batch 11061, until 03.01.2027,
  • Salami with pepper 250 g – batch 11061, until 01.01.2027,
  • Salami Mexican 250 g – batch 11061, until 01.01.2027.

What the producer and the inspection have done

GIS states that the producer started the procedure to withdraw the indicated batches from the market and took steps to determine the source of the contamination. The District Veterinary Officer in Wieliczka initiated proceedings at the plant, and an explanatory investigation was also carried out – as GIS informed, as cited among others by TVP Info. The Portalspozywczy.pl portal additionally reports that production at the plant was halted, but this detail needs confirmation in the inspection’s statement.

The statement does not specify which retail chains sold the meat products, or whether any cases of illness have been reported. As of publication, no such information is available in the reports at hand.

What listeriosis can cause

GIS reminds that eating food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can lead to listeriosis. The infection manifests primarily as digestive system complaints. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immunity should be especially cautious, although this is general medical knowledge rather than part of the GIS statement.

What this means for consumers

If you bought Bell Polska salami in 250 g packages, check the label for batch number 11061 and the best-before date (01.01.2027 or 03.01.2027). Products from this batch should not be eaten. In line with GIS advice, a person who develops symptoms of illness after eating them should contact a doctor. Return rules are set by the seller; usually a return at the place of purchase is possible.

This is not the first product safety warning we have covered – previously we reported on a GIS urgent notice about lead-contaminated glasses.
