Hołownia wants a deputy prime minister post and the culture ministry; Left raises no objection

Szymon Hołownia wants to become minister of culture with the rank of deputy prime minister, according to Rzeczpospolita. Sejm Marshal Włodzimierz Czarzasty says the Left has nothing against it, and Minister Dariusz Klimczak of the PSL says the coalition „sees no problem in this.”

According to „Rzeczpospolita”, the former Sejm Marshal is interested in combining the posts of head of the culture ministry and deputy prime minister. The paper asked Czarzasty, leader of the New Left, who replied: „we have nothing against it.” However, the decision rests with Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and no appointments had been announced as of publication.

Why the government changes are on the table

Minister of funds and regional policy Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz and her deputy Jan Szyszko are leaving the government, according to Rzeczpospolita. The paper describes a „small reconstruction” that had not been planned; its sources, including government spokesman Adam Szłapka and Czarzasty, had reportedly assured in recent months that no changes would take place.

The prime minister announced in the Sejm that he would ask President Karol Nawrocki to appoint Finance Minister Andrzej Domański as deputy prime minister, as reported by „Tygodnik Solidarność”. The president’s spokesman Rafał Leśkiewicz told TVN24 that the head of state did not intend to act under time pressure and did not name a date. According to „Rz”, the president could not act immediately because Tusk and Domański were in India and Vietnam from 21 to 26 October.

Reactions from coalition partners

Asked about the reports, Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak (PSL) said: „We see no problem in this,” as reported by Wirtualna Polska. Earlier, Czarzasty commented; his election as Sejm Marshal in November 2025 coincided with Hołownia’s departure from that post.

The idea is not new. As WP recalls, Onet reported in August that Hołownia would like to take over culture and the deputy premiership, and in September that the coalition had also discussed a funds ministry or a deputy prime minister without a portfolio. Former prime ministers Leszek Miller and Waldemar Pawlak criticised the move at the time, arguing that it would be belated.

What is still unknown

Tusk has not publicly confirmed that he is considering Hołownia’s candidacy. There is also no official statement from the Chancellery of the Prime Minister (KPRM) about changes to the government, nor information on who would head the funds ministry. Hołownia is currently a deputy Sejm Marshal and, as Bronisław Komorowski noted in August, cited by Wprost, his entry into the government would free that post and open further negotiations. The question of Hołownia’s position in Poland 2050 is complicated by the fact that the party is now led by Pełczyńska-Nałęcz, who took it over from him in January.

What it means

Changes in the government require formal decisions: motions from the prime minister and appointment by President Nawrocki, who, according to his spokesman, has no set date even for Domański’s appointment. Until Tusk presents a proposal, the statements by Czarzasty and Klimczak only show that the two coalition partners are not raising objections. A possible promotion for Hołownia would mean his return to executive power and taking over a ministry responsible, among other things, for national heritage and the financing of cultural institutions.
