IMGW warns of dense fog in 10 provinces, alert from 4 p.m.

The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management – National Research Institute (IMGW) has issued level 1 warnings for dense fog in western and southern Poland. They are in effect from Thursday, November 5, from 4 p.m. until Friday at 11 a.m., and visibility will drop below 200 m in places.

Where the warning applies

The alert covers the Lubusz, Greater Poland, Lower Silesian, Opole, Silesian and Lesser Poland voivodeships, as well as a large part of the West Pomeranian, Łódź, Holy Cross and Subcarpathian voivodeships. According to IMGW, dense fog is forecast in these areas, with visibility falling below 200 metres in places.

This is the first, lowest-level warning. It means conditions are favourable for phenomena that may cause property damage and pose a threat to health and life.

Another foggy day

The previous dense fog warning was in effect from Wednesday at 10 p.m. until Thursday at 11 a.m. At that time, IMGW gave the probability of the phenomenon as 80 percent and urged caution on the roads.

According to the institute’s Thursday forecast, cloud cover caused by fog will be locally extensive or complete in the morning, and visibility may fall as low as 100 m in the first half of the day. During the day, the fog is expected to lift, especially in the centre and south.

Frost and slippery roads

On Thursday morning at 6 a.m., the coldest place was Terespol, where thermometers showed -4.0°C. The warmest was Hel, at 8.1°C. IMGW urged caution on slippery surfaces.

The maximum temperature on Thursday is expected to range from 6°C in the south to 11°C in the north of the country. It will be cooler in the foothill areas of the Carpathians, at around 4°C. Winds will be mostly light and variable, and moderate in the north and northeast, at times gusty.

We described the beginning of the colder weather in our article on the snow warning in the Sudetes and Karkonosze. Current warnings for all regions are available at meteo.imgw.pl.
