The Sosnowiec District Prosecutor’s Office said that the 57-year-old suspect in the fatal cycling accident in which MP Łukasz Litewka died has left temporary detention today.
By decision of the court, the man was released after paying 40,000 zloty as a property bail. He was taken into custody right after the accident, which took place on 23 April 2026 on Kazimierzowska Street, between Sosnowiec and Dąbrowa Górnicza.
As a reminder: Łukasz Litewka was riding a bicycle when he was hit by a passenger car. Despite immediate resuscitation and transport to hospital, the 36-year-old MP died of his injuries.
The suspect has been charged with causing a road accident resulting in death. He faces up to 8 years in prison. The prosecutor’s office is still conducting the investigation, and the case is evolving – analyses of surveillance footage, the technical condition of the vehicle and witness statements are ongoing.
Release from custody on property bail does not mean the charges have been dropped or the proceedings discontinued. The man is barred from leaving the country and must report to the prosecutor’s office on scheduled dates.
The news of the suspect’s release has provoked mixed reactions among part of the public. The MP’s family and relatives have not commented on the court’s decision so far.
