The energy minister has set maximum fuel prices for Tuesday, 27 October: petrol 95 up to PLN 6.58 per litre, petrol 98 up to PLN 7.27, and diesel up to PLN 8.18. All caps are higher than on Monday.
The new caps follow a notice from the energy minister published on Monday, 26 October. The caps currently in force are PLN 6.51 per litre for petrol 95, PLN 7.21 for petrol 98 and PLN 7.99 for diesel. On Tuesday, prices will therefore be higher by 7 groszy, 6 groszy and 19 groszy respectively.
Petrol rises after a series of falls, diesel sharply
As „Rzeczpospolita” notes, petrol has gone up for the first time after eight consecutive cuts to the cap. Diesel is rising the most: its cap is back above PLN 8, while on Tuesday, 20 October, it stood at PLN 7.97. We reported on the details of that decision in our article on another price cut and diesel below PLN 8.
A week earlier, for Thursday, 15 October, the caps were PLN 7.01 for petrol 95 and PLN 8.05 for diesel (we wrote about this in mid-month). Petrol 95 is therefore still clearly cheaper than then, while diesel has returned to its level from the beginning of the month.
Why prices are rising
Energy Minister Miłosz Motyka told Business Insider that maximum prices depend on wholesale prices. According to that portal, Orlen raised its wholesale prices on Saturday, which translated into higher ministry caps.
The maximum prices apply under the „Ceny Paliwa Niżej” („Fuel Prices Lower”) package. The government reinstated it from the beginning of October until the end of 2026. It includes reduced excise duty at the lowest level permitted in the EU and the price caps at petrol stations announced by the energy minister.
What it means for drivers
The quoted amounts are an upper ceiling, not a mandatory price: stations may not sell above them, but they may set a lower price. For a 50-litre tank of diesel, the difference compared with Monday’s cap is at most PLN 9.50 (19 groszy times 50 litres). For petrol 95, it is at most PLN 3.50. Diesel drivers and transport companies will feel the change more than petrol car users.
The minister announces further caps from day to day or with a few days’ notice, and their level will depend on further decisions about wholesale prices.
