Warsaw police have identified the driver of a Porsche who attacked a 66-year-old woman in Mokotów on Thursday, 15 October. The man has not been detained yet.
Sergeant Marta Haberska, press officer of the Warsaw II District Police Headquarters, said officers are “moving toward detaining” the man. In a conversation with Interia, the spokeswoman said police are establishing his whereabouts but do not want to disclose details so that the suspect does not go into hiding. According to Super Express, he is a Polish citizen, and police are checking addresses where he may be staying. The man’s details have not been made public.
What happened at the intersection
The incident took place on Thursday, 15 October, at about 10:40 a.m. at the intersection of Czerniakowska Street and Witosa Avenue. Sergeant Major Paweł Chmura of the Capital City Police Headquarters told TVP3 Warszawa that the Porsche driver stopped before a pedestrian crossing, got out and struck the 66-year-old female passenger of a Toyota several times, then drove off. The couple had earlier pointed out his dangerous driving to him. According to police, the woman fell and was allegedly kicked in the head, and while fleeing, the perpetrator hit her husband. The injured woman received medical assistance on the spot. The car had German plates, and the driver spoke fluent Polish.
What police are doing
According to Interia, police initially took no broader action, because infringement of personal inviolability is prosecuted on a private indictment basis. This changed after analysis of further footage and after an official notification filed on Friday, 16 October, by the man who tried to help the couple. Testimony from new witnesses allowed the proceedings to be expanded.
Haberska said the investigation is currently being conducted under Article 160 of the Penal Code, which concerns exposing someone to danger of loss of life or health, as well as criminal threats. Police continue to summon and question witnesses. They are also awaiting testimony from the injured 66-year-old woman.
What next
For now, there is no information about an arrest or charges. The suspect is presumed innocent, and the prosecutor’s office will decide on any charges once the evidence has been gathered. As of publication, we have not found a statement on this case in the official channels of the Capital City Police Headquarters or the prosecutor’s office. The spokeswoman’s comments cited above come from media reports.
Police have previously reported similar aggressive behaviour on Warsaw roads, including the case of a BMW driver travelling at 390 km/h on the S79.
