On the last weekend of July, Piotrkowska Street in Łódź turned into a place full of surprises, some of them truly unusual! Find out why walking into a large intestine became the hit of the city’s birthday celebrations this year.
Piotrkowska – the beating heart of Łódź's 602nd birthday
During the celebrations of Łódź’s 602nd birthday, Piotrkowska literally pulsed with life. From July 26 to 27, 2025, the city’s most popular street surprised residents and tourists with as many as twelve themed zones, from culinary feasts and sports and literary zones to unforgettable concerts and all-night after parties with DJs, with Technobus serving as a mobile disco.
The most interesting attractions on Piotrkowska:
- Summer Book Festival and meetings with authors.
- An urban sports zone and skimboarding demonstrations.
- Craft workshops and juggling classes for the youngest visitors.
- World cuisine and the IKEA culinary zone.

Entering the large intestine – an attraction with a message
One of the most unusual and educational attractions of Piotrkowska’s birthday was… walking into a model of the large intestine! The structure, shaped like an impressive tunnel, allowed visitors to literally immerse themselves in the world of cancer prevention. It was not only an opportunity for selfies, but above all an encouragement to undergo regular screenings and take care of one’s health.

Although entering the intestine on Piotrkowska is a one-time attraction, the organizers hope for lasting effects. Colorectal cancer still remains a taboo subject for too long, yet it is early detection that guarantees effective treatment. Specialists stress that colonoscopy should be performed regularly, even preventively, especially if there have been cancers of the digestive tract in the family.
Other cities have also introduced such an attraction
Opole also previously hosted an unusual attraction in the form of a giant model of the large intestine that visitors could walk through. The installation stood in front of the University Clinical Hospital in Opole in the summer of 2025 and aimed to educate residents about colorectal cancer prevention. Passing through a tunnel several dozen meters long, visitors could see realistic replicas of polyps, cancerous changes and other intestinal diseases, and the whole thing was part of a campaign promoting screening tests and a healthy lifestyle.
