Shock and disbelief – this is one word to describe what happened in the Opole Zoo. In June 2025 a gruesome secret hidden in a freezing container was revealed. Animal bodies, including cheetahs and jaguar, have been rotting there for years.
What happened?

It all started with a cold container crash reported by zoo workers at the end of June. Inside were the decaying corpses of as many as seven exotic animals – two cheetahs, a Bora jaguaris, a snow panther, a bongo and two flamingos. The oldest remains lay there almost a decade, and larvae poured out of the bodies. The stench was difficult to bear – witnesses report.
Why have there been negligence?
Procedures on paper

According to the regulations, dead animals should be disposed of immediately. In the Opole Zoo, the bodies were stored in a cold store – and stayed there for years. As the new zoo director explainsAleksandra Czechowska, the previous management explained the equipment failures and unfulfilled plans for the removal of animals. None of the employees could clearly indicate why the corpse had not been disposed of before.
The scale of negligence
The case didn't come out until after another device malfunction. In the middle of the refrigeration container, about 350 kg of remains and unused animal food were found. –

Recovery
After the scandal was revealed, the zoo directorate immediately donated all the remains for disposal under strict veterinary supervision. The cold was disinfected and the plant purchased a temporary replacement device. Additionally, the city financed a new freezing container so that a similar situation would not happen again in the future.
Has the threat been resolved?
According to the director, sanitary options were preserved because the warehouse was in an administrative section not accessible to visitors. However, the shock and questions about the system that allowed for years to forget about dead animals – they remained.
It is worth asking: who watches the animals after their death, when the emotions and interest of visitors descend? Does the system of disposal and control work efficiently in every Polish zoo? The answers to these questions can say a lot about the state of national care for exotic animals.
