Poland faces another blast of winter tomorrow. Low-pressure system Wolfgang, named as such by meteorologists, is approaching our borders and will bring intense snowfall. Experts warn of transport paralysis in several regions. What should you know about this phenomenon and how should you prepare? Check the latest forecasts!
What is low-pressure system Wolfgang and where did it come from?
Wolfgang is a deep low-pressure system that formed over the Mediterranean Sea and is heading towards Central Europe. The name comes from the system used by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts for naming cyclones. In Poland it will strike tomorrow, that is on Wednesday, 26 November 2025, bringing with it an atmospheric front with heavy precipitation.
According to forecasts, this low is a Genoa low, meaning it formed in the area of the Gulf of Genoa. It is a typical system that often causes sudden weather changes in our country, especially during the transitional period between autumn and winter.
Weather forecast: Where and when will it snow?
Wolfgang will move into Poland on Tuesday evening, but the heaviest precipitation is expected on Wednesday. The snow will fall at temperatures close to 0°C, which will make it wet and heavy, increasing the risk of slips and power outages.
The most affected regions are:
- Suwałki region, Warmia and Masuria \u2013 here snow will cover roads to a depth of several centimetres.
- Southeast: Subcarpathia and Lublin region \u2013 precipitation of 10-20 cm of snow.
- Centre: Masovia and Łódź region \u2013 possible snowstorms and downpours mixed with snow.
In some places, such as Lower Silesia, the precipitation may be freezing, which will further complicate the situation. Forecasts point to snowstorms of up to 30 cm in the most exposed areas.
Impact on the country: Transport paralysis and warnings
Heavy snowstorms may paralyse road traffic, especially on the A1 and A2 motorways and on national roads in the east. Road services are already preparing for action, but drivers should avoid travelling if possible.
The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) has issued first- and second-degree warnings for snow and blizzards. Power cuts are possible due to heavy snow on power lines. In cities such as Warsaw and Kraków, pavements and streets may be buried in snow, making everyday life more difficult.
How to prepare for the winter onslaught?
To avoid problems, it is worth:
- Checking winter tyres and snow chains in your car.
- Stocking up on food and water in case of supply interruptions.
- Following current forecasts on IMGW websites or weather apps.
- Avoiding going outside during the heaviest precipitation, especially for older people and children.
Experts remind us that the second half of November 2025 brings a sharp deterioration in weather, which is typical for this period. After Wolfgang, a warm spell may follow, but for now winter is showing its claws.
