Gothic 3 Turns 20 as THQ Nordic Shows What Gothic 3 Classic Will Look Like

Gothic 3 turned 20, and to mark the occasion THQ Nordic has released new screenshots of Gothic 3 Classic and a refreshed “Making Of” documentary. The game arrives on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2 on Monday, November 24, priced at 109.99 zł.

The publisher announced the anniversary surprises on Tuesday, October 13, on the series’ official X account. It noted that exactly 20 years ago Piranha Bytes released Gothic 3, and showed screenshots from Gothic 3 Classic.

What Changes in Gothic 3 Classic

Classic is a version adapted to the current generation of consoles: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2. It will launch on November 24, 2026. According to GRYOnline.pl, compared with the original from 2006, the developers have introduced a new shading model, tone mapping and screen-space ambient occlusion (SSAO). Lighting, shadows, water and textures have also been improved.

The changes also cover gameplay balance, combat mechanics and performance. The game is also set to include community patches, fan fixes that remove thousands of bugs. Many players now consider them essential when running the original on PC.

Making Of in Better Quality

The second gift is “Gothic 3 Making Of | Remastered”. THQ Nordic has improved the picture and sound quality of the material, which was previously officially available only on DVD. The film has subtitles, including Polish ones. It runs for over an hour, and in it, staff from Piranha Bytes, who built the game from the ground up, talk about its behind-the-scenes development.

Premiere 20 Years Ago

The global premiere of Gothic 3 took place on October 13, 2006. In Poland the game was released three weeks later, on November 3. The 2006 version was criticized for numerous technical bugs, which the player community patched over the years. Hence the presence of fan fixes in the new release. At launch the game was so far ahead of its time that for many players it only became runnable once they upgraded to a more powerful computer. In many respects the game was polished to a high standard, as were its music, animations and character AI. Unfortunately, technically its optimization was lacking, which spoiled the gameplay for many people.

What It Means for Players

Classic is aimed at consoles, so owners of the PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Switch 2 will play the third part for the first time in a version tailored to these devices. The release date is November 24, and the price is 109.99 zł for a 20-year-old game given a refresh. Is that a lot? Probably for many people, but many players will buy Gothic III Classic out of nostalgia for the game. It is not a remake in the vein of the work done on the first part of the series, but a technical refresh of the original.

Gothic III Soundtrack

While we’re at it, here is the Gothic III soundtrack for you to listen to. Many consider it one of the best soundtracks of all time.
