Conclave 2025: The Door of the Sistine Chapel Closed – Special Event has begun

We heard the words "extra omnes" – everyone left the Sistine Chapel except the cardinal-electors, and the door was locked. It is a sign that the conclave has begun, one of the most mysterious and momentary rituals of the Catholic Church.

What does "extra omnes" mean?

The Latin formula "extra omnes" – "everybody outside" – is an official signal that the Sistine Chapel becomes a place of absolute mystery. From now on, the cardinal-electors are completely cut off from the outside world. The process begins, which will end with the election of a new pope – a spiritual leader of 1.4 billion Catholics in the world.

The first day of the conclave

The day began with a solemn mass in St. Peter's Basilica, after which cardinals passed through the procession to the Sistine Chapel. There they swore a vow of secrecy and allegiance to the principles of choice. After saying "extra omnes" the door was closed and the electors proceeded to the first vote, the result of which will be the smoke rising from the chimney – black means no choice, white new pope.

Mystery and tradition

Conclave is an event full of rituals. Cardinals live in the House of St.Marty and may leave the Sistine Chapel only for meals and accommodation. Everything happens in strict secrecy, and communication with the outside world is prohibited. It is a tradition dating back to the 13th century, which gives the pope's election a unique, almost film character.

What's next?

The first vote will be held tonight. If it does not bring a decision, the cardinals will vote even four times a day until they reach the required two-thirds majority. Whether we have a new pope, the world will know when white smoke rises from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel.

The Conclave is not only the choice of the leader of the Church, but also the moment when the eyes of the whole world turn to the Vatican, waiting for a historic decision.
