Tomorrow, the long-awaited Conclave 2025 begins in the Vatican, where cardinal electors will choose a new pope. Who will become the spiritual leader of 1.4 billion Catholics around the world?
How will the Conclave 2025 proceed?
As early as May 7 at 10:00, the cardinals will gather in St. Peter’s Basilica for a Mass for the election of the pope. Then, at 16:30, the solemn ceremony of entering the conclave in the Sistine Chapel will begin. From that moment, the 133 electors from 71 countries will be cut off from the world and begin secret voting.
Electing the pope requires a two-thirds majority of votes. The world will learn the result of the vote thanks to the traditional white smoke and the ringing of bells. A few dozen minutes later, the famous „Habemus Papam” will be heard from the balcony of the basilica.
Who can become pope?
Any baptized man may become the new pope, although for centuries only cardinals have been chosen. This year, as many as four Poles are among the electors: Stanisław Ryłko, Kazimierz Nycz, Konrad Krajewski and Grzegorz Ryś.
