In the Bavarian town of Lam, a scandalous incident with antisemitic overtones took place. An Israeli tourist who tried to book a room at the “Zum Hirschen” hotel via Booking.com received a blunt refusal with a racist justification.
The message sent to the customer read plainly: “We regret to inform you that Jews are not welcome in our hotel”.
The incident took place several days ago. After the case was reported, the hotel was immediately removed from Booking.com, and the Munich Public Prosecutor’s Office opened proceedings on suspicion of incitement to hatred.

The hotel owners explained their actions by pointing to immense frustration caused by a series of fake bookings that had been harassing them for months. They admitted that one of the employees had sent the message and called it a “stupid mistake” and an “inappropriate reaction”. They apologised to the affected Israeli and invited him and his family for a free week-long stay.
Despite the apology, the matter is not dying down. Israel’s Consul General in Munich, Talya Lador, publicly asked: “Have we gone back to the 1930s?”

German politicians and Jewish organisations also responded to the case. The Bavarian Government’s Commissioner for the Fight against Antisemitism and the Central Council of Jews in Germany stressed that such wording is absolutely unacceptable and cannot be justified by any circumstances.
The case has caused enormous outrage both in Germany and in Israel, reopening the debate on rising antisemitism in Europe.
