The largest “Olympic Games” for humanoid robots in history began on Thursday, attracting both crowds of spectators and enormous interest from the global media. Over three days, more than 500 robots in 280 teams are competing in as many as 26 events, ranging from classic sports such as athletics and football, through dance and boxing, to technical tasks such as sorting medicines or cleaning.
Why Beijing?
The Chinese capital is no accidental host for these games. China has for years been raising the bar in artificial intelligence and robotics, aiming for global leadership in this industry by 2027. During the opening ceremony the robots demonstrated not only sporting spirit but also a sense of humour: there were hip-hop routines, fashion shows and dynamic sports displays. Falls on the pitch and on the track were not in short supply, showing that even the most advanced technology can still be imperfect.
