Ozzy Osbourne, legendary frontman of Black Sabbath and the “Prince of Darkness”, was farewelled today by thousands of fans on the streets of Birmingham.
A Public Funeral in the Heart of Birmingham
Ozzy Osbourne’s funeral took place on 30 July 2025 in his hometown of Birmingham. It was here that his career began, and here that fans could pay their final tribute to him. The ceremonial procession set off at 13:00 from Broad Street, winding through the city centre to the iconic Black Sabbath Bridge, which in recent days has become a memorial place filled with flowers and mementos left by fans.
Family and Crowds in Mourning
Among those saying goodbye to Ozzy were his closest relatives – his wife Sharon, his children Jack and Kelly, and numerous friends. Along the procession route there was an exceptional atmosphere: Sharon Osbourne, visibly moved, embraced her children, while the crowds chanted “Thank you Ozzy!” and “Ozzy, Ozzy, Ozzy!”. A arrangement of purple flowers spelling out the word “Ozzy” was placed on the coffin.
A Special Musical Tribute for a Legend
The procession was accompanied by the local brass band Bostin’ Brass, which performed Black Sabbath’s greatest hits and Osbourne’s solo hits, such as “Crazy Train” and “Iron Man”. Music – much like Ozzy’s entire life – was the central focus of the event.
A Private Ceremony – In Keeping with Ozzy's Wishes
Although the public funeral drew crowds, the actual ceremony was intimate. Only the closest family took part – in line with the artist’s wish, as he did not want a “funeral atmosphere”, but rather a true celebration of life. Sharon Osbourne stressed that the support and love of fans had been an enormous source of strength for the family in the hardest moments.
The Legacy of the "Prince of Darkness"
Ozzy Osbourne was not only a musical legend but also a symbol of Birmingham. The city’s leaders, fans and cultural figures highlighted his contribution to the development of music and to promoting his hometown around the world. His legacy will live on in generations of metal and rock fans to come.
