Over $2.5 million has been raised to fund 300 murals commemorating Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee murdered in the United States.
Origins of the initiative and financial support

Eoghan McCabe announced that he would donate $500 thousand in grants of $10 thousand each for artists wishing to paint murals depicting Iryna Zarutska in American cities. His initiative drew the attention of Elon Musk, who pledged additional support of $1 million. In total, more than $2.5 million has been collected for the mural fund, which will allow around 300 murals to be created across the country.

Purpose and significance of the project
The murals are meant not only to commemorate Iryna Zarutska, but also to draw attention to the systemic and social problems that contributed to her tragic death. The project’s initiators stress that the goal is to ensure Iryna is not forgotten or ignored. Each mural will become a starting point for discussions on public safety and necessary systemic changes.
The image of Iryna on city walls is meant to build empathy and social awareness, while also offering space for reflection on the realities of life for refugees and victims of violence.
Implementation and next steps
The organizers are already working with more than 800 interested artists and are looking for the best locations for the murals. Applications for artists wishing to submit their projects will open soon. Each mural will be created in accordance with the law in highly visible locations, which guarantees that the message will reach the widest possible audience.
