Independence Day with Drones Taking Centre Stage

Ukraine is celebrating Independence Day by sending swarms of Ukrainian drones to attack Russian crude oil refineries.
Ukrainian drones repeatedly attacked the port of Ust-Luga and a gas processing plant near St. Petersburg, as well as the Syzran oil refinery in the Samara region.
During celebrations of Ukraine’s Independence Day, Ukrainian armed forces carried out a series of strikes on strategic Russian petrochemical targets. The operations aimed to “reduce the military and economic potential of the Russian aggressor”. Targets included refineries and transshipment terminals that support Russian military operations and the export of energy raw materials.

Main Targets Attacked
- Syzran refinery in Samara Oblast, specialising in producing fuel for the Russian army
- Liquefied gas terminal at the Ust-Luga port, a key export hub for the Russian economy
- Refinery in Komi, damaged by drones launched from Ukraine over a long distance
The attacks caused fires and explosions, significantly disrupting the production and distribution of fuel for Russian armed forces. As a result, some refineries completely halted production, while others cut it by half, creating challenges for Russian military logistics.
Russian Response and Damage Assessment
Russian regions reported the destruction of dozens of Ukrainian drones during defensive operations, but damage to Russian infrastructure is serious. Officially, no casualties have been reported, but fires and destruction of petrochemical facilities are forcing longer repair times and raising the costs of maintaining Russian armed forces.
