Overnight, Ukrainian forces carried out another effective kamikaze drone attack on Russian energy infrastructure. The most spectacular target was a Rosneft refinery in Novokuibyshevsk, in Samara oblast.
A Spectacular Strike on the Heart of the Fuel Industry
According to witnesses in nearby districts, loud explosions rang out at around 2:00 a.m. local time. Following them, a massive fire was spotted on the refinery grounds, engulfing a warehouse with an area of 1,500 m². Protective netting meant to shield the plant from air strikes had not yet been fully installed before the attack, which may have increased the effectiveness of the nighttime drone raid.
Strategic Significance and Consequences of the Attack
The Novokuibyshevsk refinery is the largest facility of its kind operated by Rosneft in the Samara region, with an annual processing capacity of 8.8 million tonnes of crude oil. The plant is a key supplier of high-quality jet engine fuel for, among others, military aviation – aircraft such as the Su-27 and Tu-22M3, which take part in Russian missile strikes on Ukraine.
Reactions and Comments
Russian authorities confirmed that a fire broke out but did not officially give a cause, stressing that there were no casualties and that employees were quickly evacuated. Independent Russian media and the portal “Ukrainska Pravda” report, however, that this is further evidence of the growing effectiveness of Ukrainian sabotage operations deep inside Russia.
More broadly, attacks of this kind are increasingly affecting the Russian energy sector and fuel market, which may result in both price pressure and difficulties supplying fuel to the front.
