Kyiv once again became the main target of a massive missile and drone attack. In a dramatic series of explosions, at least six people were killed, and many buildings were destroyed or damaged.
Night Alarm – The Start of the Drone and Missile Attack
It all began just after midnight, when air raid sirens sounded over Kyiv. The Russian army carried out three waves of attacks, using more than 300 drones and at least eight cruise missiles. The targets were not only residents, but also schools, kindergartens and children’s hospitals.
Main Impact Sites
The most affected districts were Sołomiańska, Światoszyńska, Szewczenkowska and Hołosijiwska. One of the missiles directly hit a residential block, where people were trapped under the rubble – the rescue operation lasted many hours. According to emergency services, rescuers managed to pull out a living man who had been trapped for more than five hours.
Death Toll and Scale of Destruction
According to preliminary findings, last night the enemy attacked Kyiv with “Shahed” jet-powered kamikaze drones – said Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. “We have six fatalities, 82 injured, of whom 44 are in hospitals. A six-year-old boy died in an ambulance, we could not save him. At least ten children have been injured, five of them admitted to hospital wards. The Russians did this. A five-month-old girl is also injured – the Russians targeted her too. The data is preliminary. More than one hundred facilities have been damaged: residential blocks, schools, kindergartens, medical facilities, a university – this is what the Russians are hitting. A direct missile strike destroyed the stairwell of a nine-storey building in the Svyatoshynskyi district. Once again. That is their style” – said the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko.
Life and Residents' Reactions
Kyiv residents were forced to spend the night in shelters – both in home basements and in metro stations. Throughout the night, explosions and machine gun fire used to shoot down drones could be heard across the city.
Mayor of the city, Vitali Klitschko, appealed for calm and for people to stay in shelters, stressing that “hostile drones are flying at the city from different directions”.
The dramatic events of July 31 show that hybrid warfare and mass attacks carried out by Russia spare no one – civilians, children or social infrastructure. The rescue operation is ongoing, and the death toll may still rise in the coming hours.
