Krakow mayor declares mourning after city-centre attack that killed at least five

Kraków Mayor Łukasz Gibała has signed an order declaring mourning in the city until November 11. He announced the decision on X.

Mayor’s order

Gibała published the post announcing the order on Saturday, shortly after 6 p.m. In it, he wrote that he had „just signed” the document declaring mourning in Kraków until November 11.

Attack in the city centre

The decision came several dozen minutes after the mayor’s earlier statement. At around 5:20 p.m., Gibała said that emergency services had confirmed at least five fatalities from today’s attack in the centre of Kraków. He reported that a crisis team had been set up at the city hall and that services were carrying out operations. He appealed for calm and responsibility and wrote that the city’s thoughts were with the victims’ families.

Gibała has been mayor of the city since October, when he took the oath at a session of the City Council — we reported on the handover of the chain and the key to the gates of Kraków.

As of publication, the post did not specify what concrete restrictions or forms of commemoration the mourning entails.
