The staff organized a farewell party after the decision to temporarily suspend the obstetrics ward. As a result, several participants received disciplinary notice from the hospital’s directorate

Early November Dresden County Hospital stopped the gynecological and obstetric ward. All because of an extremely difficult situation, culminating in a farewell crew party ending in layoffs.

Why did the hospital in Dresden suspend the OB ward?

Since 1 November 2025, by decision of the Regional Health Centre, the activity of the gynaecological and obstetric ward in Dresden has been suspended. Decision in force minimum 6 months and is justified by a drastic fall in births and rising operating costs. The President of Agnieszka Banaszek Hospital stressed that this was not a liquidation, but a necessary break, thanks to which the facility can survive a difficult time.

Numbers That Say Everything

  • 2015: 572 childbirths
  • 2024: 227 childbirths
  • first nine months 2025: only 117 births

Specialists indicate that a viable and secure branch should receive at least one birth per day and the current figures are several times lower.

The last day of the branch's work ended with a loud party, during which, as the media reports, the staff played with music and dances. Although the event was to be goodbye (and according to the relationship was non-alcoholic), for several employees it ended disciplinary solution to the employment contract. This decision has aroused emotions among the residents and employees of the hospital – some consider it too harsh, others stress the need to maintain standards in the workplace.
