Today Poland took a major step toward energy independence. A new agreement has been signed to build the first nuclear power plant, which is meant to provide clean and stable energy for decades.
New agreement for the nuclear power plant – what has changed?
The bridging agreement signed today (EDA – Engineering Development Agreement) between Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ), the Polish nuclear power company, and the American consortium Westinghouse-Bechtel marks a new stage in the implementation of Poland’s nuclear power programme. Prime Minister Donald Tusk stressed that thanks to changes in as many as 16 key areas, the investment has become more secure and better protects the interests of both sides.
The EDA agreement covers, among other things:
- Continuation of design work,
- Obtaining administrative decisions and licences,
- Further geological surveys,
- Improved investor supervision of contract implementation.
This is the response to the expiry of the earlier ESC contract, and a guarantee that the construction schedule is not at risk.
Nuclear power plant in Pomerania – schedule and significance
When will power from Poland’s nuclear plant flow?
The first Polish nuclear power plant will be built in Lubiatowo-Kopalino in Pomerania. Key dates:
- Start of construction: 2028,
- Completion of the first unit: 2035,
- Power from Poland’s nuclear plant will flow into the grid in 2036.
The investment will include the construction of three units with a total capacity of up to 3,750 MWe, using the advanced AP1000 technology from Westinghouse.
Why is this so important?
Building a nuclear power plant means:
- Greater energy security for Poland,
- Reduced CO2 emissions and fulfilment of EU climate goals,
- Diversification of energy sources and independence from raw material imports.
Prime Minister Tusk stressed that the project will create tens of thousands of jobs both in Poland and in the USA.
Poland – a new player on the European nuclear map
The agreement signed today is not only a step toward large-scale nuclear power. Poland and the USA are also announcing cooperation on small modular reactors (SMRs) and further development of nuclear and gas energy, including LNG supplies.
