The first Polish nuclear power plant is coming closer – a key contract has been signed!

Today Poland has taken a milestone towards energy independence. A new agreement was signed to build the first nuclear power plant to provide clean and stable energy for decades.

A new contract for the construction of a nuclear power plant – what changed?

Podpisana dziś umowa pomostowa (EDA – Engineering Development Agreement) między spółką Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe a amerykańskim konsorcjum Westinghouse-Bechtel wyznacza nowy etap w realizacji polskiego programu jądrowego. Premier Donald Tusk podkreślił, że dzięki zmianom w aż 16 kluczowych obszarach inwestycja stała się pewniejsza i lepiej zabezpieczona pod względem interesów obu stron.

The EDA agreement includes, inter alia:

  • Continuation of project work,
  • Obtaining administrative decisions and licences,
  • Further geological studies,
  • Improvement of investor supervision over performance of the contract.

This is a response to the expiry of an earlier ESC contract and a guarantee that the construction schedule is not compromised.

Atomic power plant in Pomerania – schedule and importance

When will the current flow from the Polish atom?

Pierwsza polska elektrownia atomowa powstanie w Lubiatowie-Kopalino na Pomorzu. Kluczowe daty:

  • Construction start: 2028,
  • Final block one: 2035,
  • The current from the Polish atom will flow to the net in 2036.

The investment will include the construction of three blocks with a total power of up to 3,750 MW, using Westinghouse's modern AP1000 technology.

Why is it so important?

The construction of the nuclear power plant is:

  • Increasing the energy security of Poland,
  • Reducing CO2 emissions and meeting EU climate targets,
  • Diversification of energy sources and independence from imports of raw materials.

Prime Minister Tusk stressed that the project would create tens of thousands of jobs both in Poland and in the USA.

Poland – a new player on the European atomic map

The agreement signed today is not just a step towards a large atom. Poland and the USA also announce cooperation with small modular reactors (SMR) and further development of nuclear and gas power, including LNG supplies.

Key benefits for Poland:

  • Stable, clean energy all year round,
  • Modern technologies and knowledge transfer,
  • Strengthening Poland's position in the region of Central and Eastern Europe.

What's next?

Today's agreement to build the first Polish nuclear power plant is a historic moment. It makes Poland the leader of the energy transition in the region and gains a real chance of energy independence for many years.

„Z przyjaciółmi można negocjować każdy szczegół – między naszymi przedstawicielami panuje przyjaźń oparta na wiarygodnych decyzjach” – podkreślił premier Donald Tusk.
