Police set up operation command on Kaliningrad border over sabotage risk

A special operation headquarters has been set up at the National Police Headquarters (KGP) for the Warmian-Masurian and Podlaskie voivodeships, the national police commander, Gen. Marek Boroń, told RMF FM on Monday, 2 November. The reason is signals of possible acts of sabotage on the border with the Kaliningrad Oblast.

According to the police chief, the operation is directed by the headquarters in Warsaw, and the regional police headquarters in Olsztyn and Białystok have been brought into the activities. The police are conducting it together with the army, the Border Guard and special services. Boroń spoke of preventive actions linked to signals that sabotage could take place on the border in the coming days.

What the national commander said

„The police are securing the Kaliningrad Oblast against possible events that could lead to acts of sabotage,” Boroń told RMF FM. He added that reinforcements from police units in several voivodeships have arrived at the border. „A large group of officers is operating there, part of the police forces have been transferred there, and counter-terrorism officers are also taking part in this operation,” he said.

The police chief stressed that the operation is directly related to the current situation in the country, including the threat of sabotage and subversion. According to some media reports, it also concerns the activities of eastern services and warnings from military intelligence and allied services. In the quoted statements, the commander did not elaborate on these details, and the services did not say what kind of incidents they fear.

Readiness from 2 to 8 November

The Local Government Portal (Portal Samorządowy) cites a post by the KGP on the X platform. In it, the police wrote that a document on full readiness of officers from 2 to 8 November „is linked to current threats related to acts of sabotage and subversion”. The post was meant as a response to speculation surrounding this document.

Boroń also denied that the mobilisation of the services had any connection with the crisis around the Constitutional Tribunal and earlier police actions outside its seat. The reinforcements were described by RMF FM.

What it means

Residents of Warmia, Masuria and Podlasie may see more patrols by police, soldiers and Border Guard officers in the border zone in the coming days, until 8 November. These are preventive measures, and the commander did not report any specific incident or arrests. As of publication, it has not been said whether the rules for movement in the border zone are changing. Suspicious situations should be reported to the emergency number 112.
