A massive fire in Ząbki near Warsaw left hundreds of people without a roof over their heads and destroyed more than 200 flats. Rescue services are still working on site, while residents wait for help and decisions about the future of their homes.

The tragic events unfolded on Thursday evening in a housing estate on Powstańców Street in Ząbki. The fire engulfed the roof of a large residential block, spreading rapidly to further floors and cellars. According to firefighters, the entire roof was completely burned out, and the flats on the fourth and fifth floors have practically ceased to exist.

Water used to fight the fire seeped into the lower floors, causing serious flooding and further damage in other flats. The fire even reached the basement, where one of the parked cars burned.

Course of the Rescue Operation

At the peak of the firefight, as many as 300 firefighters were deployed, supported by 45 fire engines, 5 tankers and 8 aerial ladders and turntable ladders. The operation lasted all night and was exceptionally difficult. The fire spread very quickly, and rescuers had to work from the outside, as vehicles could not access the building’s courtyard.

Firefighters extinguished remaining embers, searched the flats and removed structural elements of the roof to eliminate hidden sources of fire. The site was secured, and operations were carried out under the close supervision of the commander.

Residents' Situation and Support

The fire in Ząbki is a tragedy for the local community. More than 500 people have lost their homes, and returning to their flats will not be possible for many months. The building requires a thorough renovation or even reconstruction, which – according to the deputy interior minister – may take more than a year.

Those affected can count on financial support – the standard payment is PLN 8,000 in emergency aid, and depending on the scale of the damage, additional government funds may be made available. A crisis team and local and state services are operating on site.

Safety and Next Steps

Most importantly, no one died in the fire – all residents and animals were evacuated in time. Three people suffered minor injuries, and one firefighter was taken to hospital with a sprained leg.

A detailed search of the building and assessment of the damage are currently underway. Authorities have urged people to refrain from speculating about the cause of the fire – experts and forensic technicians are handling the investigation.
