Bonnie Tyler has died, one of the most recognisable female vocalists of the 1980s and 90s. The singer, best known for the hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart”, passed away yesterday (8 July) in Portugal. She was 75.
Bonnie Tyler’s family issued an official statement announcing the singer’s death. They also asked for their privacy to be respected during this difficult time. Details regarding the cause of death have not yet been disclosed.

Bonnie Tyler (born Gaynor Hopkins-Sullivan) was born on 8 June 1951 in Skewen, Wales. She debuted in 1976 with the hit “Lost in France”, while her songs brought her worldwide fame:
- “Total Eclipse of the Heart” (1983)
- “Holding Out for a Hero” (1984 – soundtrack to the film Footloose)
- “It’s a Heartache”
In 2013, she represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest. In 2023, she was awarded the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to music.
In recent months, the singer struggled with serious health problems. In May 2025, she underwent urgent bowel surgery, after which she was taken to intensive care and placed in a medically induced coma. She was brought out of the coma in June, but her condition remained critical.
Bonnie Tyler leaves behind an enormous musical legacy and a loyal fan base around the world.
