Chris Rea, creator of the Christmas hit Driving Home for Christmas, died

On the eve of Christmas, the world of music mourned. Chris Rea, a British singer and guitarist, primarily known for his immortal hit "Driving Home for Christmas", died at the age of 74. The artist left on December 22, 2025 at the hospital after a short illness, informed his family in an official statement.

Who was Chris Rea?

Christopher Anton Rea was born on March 4, 1951 in Middlesbrough, England. He came from a family of Italian and Irish roots – his father ran an ice cream shop, which Rea often mentioned in interviews as an inspiration for hard work. He began his musical career in the 1970s, initially playing in local teams. The breakthrough came in 1978 with the debut album "Whatever Happened to Benny Santini?", although true fame was brought to him by the 1989 album "The Road to Hell", which peaked at the charts in Europe.

Rea was a blues-rock and soft rock champion, combining catchy tunes with introspective lyrics. His music often talked about travel, life on the road and personal struggles. The artist released over 20 studio albums, selling millions of albums worldwide. In Poland he gained popularity thanks to hits such as "Fool (If You Think It's Over)" or "On the Beach".

Fighting disease and returning to the stage

Chris Re's life wasn't roses. In 2000, the musician underwent a serious health crisis – he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. In 2001, his pancreas, part of his stomach and small intestine were removed. Despite this, Rea returned to music, recording albums inspired by blues, like "Blue Guitars" – a monumental project consisting of 11 albums. In interviews, he said that the disease changed his attitude to life, making him more reflective.

Unfortunately, health problems have returned. In 2016, he suffered a stroke, which affected his mobility, but did not stop the concerts. He spent the last few years recording and performing, though limited.

"Drive Home for Christmas" – Christmas hit

Chris Rea's greatest legacy remains the track "Driving Home for Christmas", written in 1978 while driving a car with his wife in a snowstorm. The song, released in 1988, became a Christmas classic, played annually on radios and playlists worldwide. The text about homesickness and loved ones resonates with millions of listeners, especially during Christmas.

The irony of fate is that Rea died exactly on the eve of Christmas – 22 December 2025. Fans all over the world remember him because of the prism of this hit.

Chris Rea left his wife Joan and two daughters. His music, full of warmth and authenticity, will accompany us for another holiday.
