In Kasur, Pakistan, police broke up a recent rave at a farmhouse – detaining as many as 30 boys and 25 girls, many of whom were children of influential military officers and politicians from the ruling PML-N party.
Night raid and an unexpected finale
Under cover of night, police from Kasur, acting on reports of noise and suspected use of intoxicating substances, carried out a sudden raid on a private house near Pakka Haveli. On site, officers found a group of several dozen young people – 55 people in total, aged from their teens to their early twenties, including children of military officers and politicians.
Among the items seized were:
- bottles of alcohol,
- so-called “dancing pills”,
- shisha pipes,
- professional sound equipment.
After being detained, the participants were taken to the Mustafabad police station. Officers posted footage from the intervention online, which sparked a nationwide debate on the right to privacy and the methods used by the authorities.
The following day, a local court in Kasur dismissed the cases against all those detained. The reason given was the lack of sufficient evidence and the lack of a search warrant during the police operation, while the local police chief accused his subordinates of exceeding their powers. Authorities have launched a separate investigation into police misconduct.
Examples of social reactions
Some members of society demanded that the young people be punished for breaking the law and social norms.
Others pointed to hypocrisy in the actions of the authorities and to the social problem of closed, uncontrolled parties organised by wealthier residents.

Controversies surrounding police actions
After the case was made public, controversies came to light that further heightened the tension:
- Police officers filmed the detainees, and footage of the intervention leaked onto the internet, showing the faces of the young people.
- Due to a massive wave of public criticism and accusations of violating privacy as many as five police officers were suspended or dismissed from their jobs.
- The investigation found that some officers may have colluded with the organisers – including by warning them in advance about the planned raid.
