A moving moment for Poland and science: Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski, member of the Axiom 4 mission, shared his first view of Earth from space. An event that will go down in the history books.
First View of Earth – A Breathtaking Moment
Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski, the second Pole in history on the International Space Station, posted a short video on social media showing Earth as seen from orbit. ”My first view of it and of you. Good evening” – wrote the astronaut, stirring great excitement among internet users and space enthusiasts. The recording, most likely made still aboard the Dragon Grace capsule before the crew reached the ISS, shows our planet in all its glory – clouds, the ocean and the curvature of the horizon are visible.
Axiom 4 Mission – a Pole Aboard the ISS
The Axiom 4 mission is the fourth commercial crewed expedition carried out by Axiom Space. Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski flew to the ISS together with astronauts from India, Hungary and the USA. The Polish participation is the result of cooperation between the Ministry of Development and Technology and the European Space Agency – as part of the Polish technological and scientific mission IGNIS.
Experiments and Education in Space
During his stay on the ISS, the Pole is carrying out as many as 13 experiments designed by Polish companies and research institutions. They concern, among other things, testing new technologies, studying noise in the workplace, and the impact of radiation on astronaut protection. In addition, he is conducting 30 educational and popular science demonstrations and connecting with Polish amateur radio operators.
What Does Earth Look Like from Space? An Astronaut's Reflections
The view of Earth from over 400 km up is an experience that is hard to compare with anything else. Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski did not hide his emotion as he shared this moment with his compatriots. In the Cupola observation module, which provides a panoramic view of our planet, the astronaut can see as many as a dozen or so sunrises and sunsets within a single day.
Poles in Space – A New Chapter
Forty-seven years after the flight of Mirosław Hermaszewski, Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski is the next Pole to be able to admire Earth from space. His first look at our planet is not only a personal achievement, but also a symbol of the development of Polish science and technology.
This event shows that Polish science has the ambition and capability to take part in the greatest global projects. The view of Earth through the eyes of Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski is a postcard from the future that is only now becoming the present.
