US Officially Confirms Weapons in Earth’s Orbit

The United States has for the first time publicly acknowledged that American weapons systems are located in Earth’s orbit. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink stated that US Space Forces are already deploying “space control weapons” capable of protecting US forces and assets from hostile action.

The statement was made on September 14, 2026, during the Air, Space and Cyber conference in National Harbor, Maryland. Meink said:

“Today we continue to ensure we remain ready for the challenges posed by evolving threats, wherever they arise. That is why the United States now has space control weapons in orbit capable of defending joint forces against hostile action by an adversary”.

The wording, he stressed, was carefully chosen. He refused to provide any details: the type of systems, their number, launch date, or whether they are kinetic or non-kinetic weapons. During the question-and-answer session, he repeated that the phrase was “very well thought out” and that further disclosure of details would not serve deterrence.

What “space control weapons” may mean

The Washington Post wrote that these systems may be able to disable an adversary’s satellites if those satellites attack US forces or spacecraft. Washington presented the announcement as a response to Russian and Chinese military satellite programmes and offensive manoeuvres in orbit, including jamming and the use of lasers.

In Space Force doctrine, “space control” covers both defensive and offensive actions. It involves disrupting, degrading and, if necessary, destroying an adversary’s capabilities by kinetic and non-kinetic means. A service spokesperson confirmed that such capabilities may be used offensively and defensively on the orders of commands.

Experts cautiously note that this is most likely not about classic missiles destroying satellites, which create clouds of debris. Orbital jammers, electronic warfare systems or other reversible means that switch off or blind an enemy satellite without permanently cluttering orbit are more often mentioned. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty bans placing weapons of mass destruction in orbit, but does not prohibit other weapon systems.

Context of the race for orbit

For years the Pentagon warned about Chinese and Russian combat capabilities in space, while avoiding public confirmation of its own weapons in orbit. Meink’s announcement is therefore a change in rhetoric: the US wants to show that it is not leaving these challenges unanswered. Gen. Douglas Schiess, the new head of space operations, said a day later that “the time has come” to talk about this, because adversaries are developing, among other things, satellites capable of intercepting and moving other objects.

Some analysts warn that public confirmation could accelerate an arms race. Victoria Samson of the Secure World Foundation assessed that this is the first time a US official has officially acknowledged placing a system designed as a weapon in space, rather than merely a satellite with an additional capability. China has called on the US to stop the militarisation of outer space.

In the same speech, Meink also spoke about an orbital missile interceptor programme within the Golden Dome shield and a constellation of satellites tracking moving targets. These are separate programmes, but they fit the same direction: the US treats orbit as a combat domain, not just a base for intelligence and communications.

The practical consequence is clear. Navigation, communications and reconnaissance satellites have become the backbone of modern land, sea and air operations. Whoever controls orbit can blind an adversary on Earth. Washington has just acknowledged that it does not intend to leave this layer without its own shield and, if necessary, its own blade.
