On May 24, residents of Krakow will decide the fate of President Alexander Miszalski and the City Council

Election Commissioner Dagmara Anna Danniec-Cisło set the final date of the referendum in Krakow. The vote on the cancellation of the city president Alexander MiszaIski and the entire Krakow City Council will take place on Sunday, May 24, 2026.

Aleksander Miszalski, politician of the Civic Coalition, has held the office of President of Krakow since 2024. The referendum initiative came from residents and was supported by the opposition. The organizers of the action, declaring apolitical character, collected nearly 134 thousand signatures in just 43 days – well above the required minimum of over 58 thousand.

The residents will answer two questions: "Are you in favour of the cancellation of Mr Alexander Jan Miszalski as President of the City of Krakow before the end of his term?" and "Are you in favour of the cancellation of the City Council of Krakow before the end of his term?".

Critics accuse the president, among others, of being a dude, excessive city debt, unworthy of holding office, increases in public transport ticket prices and the introduction of the Clean Transport Zone.

The referendum decision was published on 7 April 2026. This is the first referendum in Krakow history on the dismissal of the President and the City Council before the end of the term of office.

The outcome of the vote will determine the future of both the President and the Council. In the event of cancellation, early elections will be held.
