In Poland, after years of break, there was again a case of cholera. Do we have cause for concern? Learn key information about the disease, its threat and the activities of health services.
What is cholera and how did infection occur in Poland?
Hell, it's an acute gastrointestinal disease caused by Vibrio cholerae. The most common infection is by eating contaminated water or food. The last confirmed case in Poland concerns an older woman from Stargard who did not travel abroad. This is the first such incident in six years. The patient was transported to a hospital in severe condition: with severe diarrhoea, dehydration and renal failure. About 20-26 people from close surroundings were quarantined.
Shit in Poland – forgotten threat or new reality?
Contrary to belief, cholera is not just a problem for distant countries. For decades, isolated cases in Poland have been reported mainly in travelers returning from Asia or Africa. This time the disease appeared locally, with no connection to foreign trips.
History of the cholera epidemic
- The 19th century: numerous epidemics, mass deaths, the formation of special "damn" cemeteries.
- The 20th and 21st centuries: through the development of medicine, the effectiveness of antibiotics and better hygiene – mortality has decreased significantly.
- The past few years: isolated cases, usually imported, quick handling of the situation.
Symptoms, prevention and rapid reaction – what is worth knowing?
Shit's developing fast. The most important symptoms are:
- aqueous diarrhoea (so-called "rice water")
- vomiting
- very rapid dehydration, which can lead to death within several hours
How do you protect yourself?
- Drink only water from a safe source
- Avoid eating unwashed fruit and vegetables
- Wash hands carefully, especially after contact with water or before eating
If cholera is suspected: contact your doctor immediately, start irrigation and follow health instructions.
What is the global situation and is Poland facing an epidemic?
The World Health Organisation is alerting about the increase in cholera cases in the world – especially in regions affected by natural disasters. Vaccination deficiency and increasing extreme weather phenomena are conducive to the spread of this disease. In Poland, sanitary and epidemiological services work smoothly: supervision of people from the sick has been introduced and strict procedures have been implemented.
Risk assessment
Experts unanimously calm down – the current situation is an incident, not the beginning of an epidemic. The risk of a wider outbreak of cholera in Poland is very low, if vigilance and rapid response to any case of danger are maintained.

Famous Poles who died of cholera
Hell took lives not only anonymous victims, but also important figures in Poland's history. An example is the outstanding poet of Romanticism – Julius Słowackiwhose mother, Salomea Bécu, died of cholera in 1836. Slovakia itself struggled with fear of this disease during successive waves of epidemics in Europe. He died of cholera, too. Frederick Chopin senior, father of the famous composer, in 1844 in Warsaw. The epidemics that passed through Poland in the 19th century spared few – the victim of this disease was also Stanisław Moniuszko, although in the case of the composer there are still discussions among historians about the exact cause of his death. The tragic fate of known families reminds us that even cultural and social elites were not protected from the effects of the epidemic.
Hell rarely returns, but it still requires vigilance. This is an excellent opportunity to remember the basic principles of hygiene and responsibility for the health of your and your loved ones.
