Kraków Mayor Łukasz Gibała has urgently requested that the title of Honorary Citizen of Kraków be granted to two police officers who on Saturday stopped an attacker in the city centre. He wrote about it on X on Sunday, 8 November.
The motion concerns officers Artur Morański and Jakub Kulik. Gibała wrote that they „in heroic circumstances neutralised the murderer, saving the lives of others”. The post appeared at around 12:51.
How the intervention unfolded
The police published a timeline of the operation on Sunday. The first reports reached the Voivodeship Emergency Notification Centre at 15:00:15, and there were nearly 40 in total. In the third minute, officers launched an intervention, an exchange of fire with the attacker took place, and they then pursued him. Two officers were wounded.
30 police patrols and 24 units of the State Fire Service with 62 rescue firefighters were dispatched to the scene. According to the police, more than a thousand officers were involved in the operation.
Condition of the wounded officer
The police said in the morning that Senior Constable Jakub Kulik had been seriously wounded and was fighting for his life in hospital. Blood of group AB Rh+ was needed, and people donating it were asked to indicate that it was intended for him. Another collection, organised by the HDK KSP Club, will take place on Monday, 9 November, from 8:30 to 13:30.
Background
In connection with the attack, Gibała declared a period of mourning in Kraków until 11 November. The Lesser Poland Police had earlier reported that the perpetrator is a citizen of the Republic of Poland.
The title of Honorary Citizen of Kraków is conferred by the City Council. As of publication, no date had been given for when councillors will consider the motion.
