A strong magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, 10 August 2026. The tremor was felt across much of the country and in neighbouring states.
Where and when?
The epicentre was located in the Chocó department, about 5–20 km east of the town of San José del Palmar. The quake struck at 7:34 a.m. local time (2:34 p.m. Polish time) at a depth of roughly 96–110 km.
The earthquake was felt, among other places, in Bogotá, Cali, Pereira, Manizales and Medellín, as well as in Ecuador, Panama and Venezuela.
Impact
Authorities report:
- injuries among residents,
- damage to and collapses of buildings (particularly in Cali, Quibdó, Pereira and Manizales),
- damage to facades, walls and infrastructure,
- problems at several regional airports.
The governor of the Chocó department, Nubia Carolina Córdoba, reported injuries and serious destruction in the regional capital, Quibdó. The mayor of Cali reported that many buildings had collapsed and that people were trapped under the rubble. In Manizales, the cathedral was among the buildings damaged.
In Bogotá, people rushed out of buildings en masse, but according to city authorities no significant structural damage was recorded.

Warnings
The US Tsunami Warning System did not issue a tsunami warning. Colombian authorities are warning of aftershocks and are carrying out damage assessments.
The earthquake was of intermediate type (at considerable depth) and was linked to the subduction of the Nazca Plate beneath the South American Plate.
