UK defence chief: country must be ready for war, sets timeline

UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting warned that the country has just over 1,000 days to prepare for a possible war, because by 2030 London’s rivals could be capable of attack. He pointed to Russia’s growing potential.

The warning came in an article by Streeting in the daily „The Telegraph”, published on Saturday, 24 October. As LBC reports, among others, the minister called preparing the country for conflict his „defining priority”. He wrote that the aim is for Britain to be ready to „fight and win” a war.

„Capabilities have changed”

Streeting argues that the will of its opponents to harm the UK is nothing new. In his view, however, their capabilities have changed. According to a quote cited by HuffPost UK, the minister believes that by 2030 the strength of enemy armies and their war economies could allow them to attack. British media link this to Russia’s intensifying hybrid war against NATO.

The minister also stressed that the primary goal is deterrence. „To prevent the worst, we must prepare for it” he wrote. He added that if deterrence fails, the country must be ready for war. According to LBC, the 1,000-day figure is the time to strengthen defences together with NATO allies.

Background: sabotage, cyberattacks and a public campaign

The publication came a few days after the launch of a government campaign, which we wrote about in our article on the „Be Ready” campaign and home stockpiles. In it, the government recommends that households keep a supply of food and water for at least three days. It is a recommendation, not an obligation. According to HuffPost UK, the aim is for society to be able to survive three days without access to supermarkets and electronic payments.

LBC recalls two earlier developments. The first is reports that Russia is using fishing trawlers as „commercial covers” to gather information about British undersea cables. The second is ministers’ announcement of tougher prison sentences for sabotaging critical infrastructure. LBC also mentions a serious PHP vulnerability that caused website outages worldwide. However, it does not attribute it to any state.

A dispute over money

According to GB News, the government is criticised for lacking a plan to reach the target of 3% of GDP on defence by 2030. The NATO target is 3.5% by 2035. Streeting said he is „100%” confident that the latter threshold will be met.

Streeting has headed the Ministry of Defence since 20 July; previously he was Health Secretary. In Washington on 15 October he said threats were drawing closer to the UK, and the war in Ukraine had shown the need to develop and produce weapons faster, reports the VINnews portal.

What it means

For readers in Poland, this is a signal that an important NATO ally is officially adopting 2030 as the horizon for a possible conflict with Russia. The British assessment does not change the legal situation or alliance obligations. Nor is it an announcement of war, but rather a justification for higher defence spending. As of publication, no reaction from Moscow had been reported.
