The Twin Towers have once again appeared over New York Harbor. Not made of concrete and steel, but of light. On the eve of the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, thousands of drones formed the outline of the destroyed World Trade Center towers in the sky.
What was shown?
The installation is called “2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor”. 2,977 drones took to the air, one for each victim of the September 11 attacks.
First, the lights rose in a spiral over the water. Then they formed a full-scale outline of both towers. A moment later they broke apart again into individual points and disappeared.
25 years later
On September 11, 2001, 2,977 people died: in New York, at the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Over the following years, thousands more died from illnesses linked to the rescue and recovery effort.
On Friday, September 11, 2026, ceremonies for the families will take place at Ground Zero.
The towers did not return to the Manhattan skyline. For a few minutes they returned to the sky as 2,977 lights, to remind all the victims that we remember them.
