Andrew Barber, a 39-year-old man, was found alive after nine days missing in the wilderness of British Columbia in Canada. He was located on August 8, 2025, north of Williams Lake, near McLeese Lake.
Missing in the Canadian Wilderness
The man’s car broke down on a forest road, and police spotted the vehicle from a helicopter, which allowed rescuers to find it in the bushes near the car. Doctors assessed that without rapid help he would not have survived another 24 hours. The search covered hundreds of kilometres of difficult, marshy terrain and was considered very difficult, like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Barber had several injuries, including an injured right leg, and was severely dehydrated. Despite the harsh conditions, he survived by drinking water from a pond, which was however contaminated, as well as by eating whatever he could find and building a makeshift shelter from sticks and mud. He kept warm by stuffing grass into his clothing. Near his shelter he wrote “help” on a rock and made an “SOS” sign on the ground to alert rescuers.
The man was flown by helicopter to Cariboo Memorial Hospital, where he received medical care, and was then discharged home, where he reunited with his family. Rescuers and police praised his knowledge of the wilderness and the persistence of the search teams, which contributed to his survival.
