Łukasz Litewka died tragically on 23 April 2026, and his death moved thousands of Poles. The young Left (Lewica) MP and dedicated community activist left a void that many are trying to fill by visiting his grave at the cemetery in Sosnowiec. Unfortunately, an incident occurred at his grave: the decorations caught fire, most likely from an excess of candles.
Who was Łukasz Litewka?
Łukasz Litewka was only 36 years old. Born in Sosnowiec, he was a sociologist by training, a city councillor, and from 2023 a member of the Sejm. He was best known, however, as a man who truly helped people, especially animals and those in need. He founded the Team Litewka Foundation, organised fundraising campaigns, and responded to hundreds of requests every day.
His funeral on 29 April drew huge crowds. People came not only to say goodbye to a politician, but above all to a good man from the Zagłębie region.
A sea of candles and flowers
In the first weeks after the burial, the grave at the Parish Cemetery on Zuzanny Street was buried under flowers, wreaths and hundreds of lit candles. On the day Łukasz would have turned 37 (9 May), there were especially many visitors.
However, the family appealed for caution: instead of flowers and candles, they asked for support for the foundation and help for animals. Even so, people continued to bring these symbols of remembrance.
The fire incident – what happened?
According to accounts from internet users and footage circulating online, the decorations at the grave caught fire. The likely cause was an excess of candles and flammable materials gathered in one place.
