Prime Minister Donald Tusk will deliver an address on Saturday, 31 October, at 8 p.m. As the Chancellery of the Prime Minister and media outlets reported, the head of government will most likely address the situation surrounding the Constitutional Tribunal.
The Chancellery of the Prime Minister announced the speech on social media on Saturday, as reported by Polsat News. The announcement does not officially specify the topic, but media outlets, which are writing about the Tribunal, assume the speech will concern it. The content of the address is not known at the time of publication.
Background: Friday at the Tribunal
As we reported in our article on the suspension of the duties of the Tribunal’s president and vice-president, on Friday, 30 October, a notice appeared on the Tribunal’s website announcing the suspension of official duties of President Bogdan Święczkowski and Vice-President Bartłomiej Sochański. Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska was to take over the leadership.
The Tribunal’s official account on X responded that the website had been subjected to an „unlawful takeover” and that Święczkowski remains president. The police reported activities at the Tribunal’s premises and the detention of three people, who are being investigated for trespassing (Article 193 of the Penal Code). The detained persons are suspects, which does not determine their guilt.
According to Interia, Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek submitted five motions to the Tribunal to lift the immunities of Święczkowski and Sochański. The prime minister had already commented on the matter earlier, saying, according to this portal, that „there is no other way”.
What’s next
We will report on the decisions and announcements made in the address after the prime minister speaks. At this point there is no official confirmation of whether the head of government will announce specific steps or present a political position.
