Collision of German Bundeswehr military trucks on the A4 near Wrocław

Three German soldiers suffered minor bruises in a collision of two military trucks on the A4 motorway near Kostomłoty in Lower Silesia, the Military Gendarmerie (ŻW) reported on Wednesday, 4 November. Poland was only a transit country for the German convoy.

What the Military Gendarmerie reported

According to an ŻW statement published on X, the incident took place on Wednesday on the A4 near the village of Kostomłoty in Lower Silesian Voivodeship. Two military trucks of the German armed forces were involved. The cause was failure to maintain a proper distance between the vehicles.

Three soldiers were taken to hospital with general bruising. The Gendarmerie stated that their injuries posed no threat to life or health.

Traffic disruption

The incident caused traffic disruptions. As TVP Wrocław reported, the right lane towards Wrocław was blocked, and traffic was moving in the left lane. A tailback several kilometres long, reaching about 10 km, formed. The Military Gendarmerie was to handle the removal of the vehicles.

An MP’s question and a spokesman’s answer

Earlier in the day, MP Marek Jakubiak asked on X about the presence of German soldiers on the A4, publishing photos of the passing trucks. Lieutenant Colonel Dariusz Rozkosz, spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the ŻW, responded: “Poland was a transit country”. He added that, under the transit permit issued, the convoy did not require escort by Polish armed forces.

Context

Transits of allied convoys through Poland are frequent, especially during exercise periods. In mid-October we wrote about planned November manoeuvres of soldiers from the United Kingdom, France and Germany.
