Shane and Hannah Burcaw Expecting a Baby as Squirmy and Grubs Announce Pregnancy

Hannah Burcaw is 20 weeks pregnant, and the couple expects their first child in January. After years of trying and failed IVF, their joy is immense.

Shane Burcaw and Hannah Aylward, known to millions of fans as Squirmy and Grubs, have just shared one of the most important pieces of news in their lives. On September 8, 2026, the couple announced that Hannah is 20 weeks pregnant and the baby is due in January 2027.

How It All Began

Shane was born with spinal muscular atrophy type 2 (SMA type 2). The disease causes progressive muscle weakness, and he has used a power wheelchair since childhood. Hannah is fully mobile. Their story began quite unexpectedly. Hannah saw Shane in a short documentary and wrote to him. They started getting to know each other, and over time the relationship became serious. They have lived together since 2018, and in 2020 they got married in an intimate ceremony during the pandemic, with guests joining via Zoom.

From the beginning, they have shared their life on YouTube. The Squirmy and Grubs channel has become a place where they openly talk about the everyday life of an interabled couple, about intimacy, about prejudice, and about how disability does not define a person. Shane has repeatedly stressed that people assume his sex life is impossible or that he will never be able to have children. The couple has consistently debunked these myths.

The Road to Pregnancy Was Not Easy

For years they tried to conceive. They went through many IVF cycles. Shane took medication to slow the progression of SMA, which also significantly reduced his fertility. To have any chance of conception, he sometimes had to stop or modify the dose, which carried risks to his health. There were times when sperm test results showed zero viable sperm. After a series of setbacks, the couple took a break. They returned to trying later. And finally, it worked.

Hannah took a test just eight days after ovulation. The result was positive. They immediately went to a store for more tests, and there Shane spotted a blue cap with the word “dad” on it. He took it as a sign. For the first five months they kept the news to themselves. They wanted to enjoy this time calmly and decide how much and how they would share it.

What the Couple Says About Pregnancy and Parenthood

Hannah is feeling well. She has not had severe nausea, although some food aversions have appeared and she has recently had pelvic pain. Shane has started a separate baby blog. They want to be more careful about how much of the child’s privacy they show the world.

The couple is also aware that announcing a pregnancy can be difficult for people who are still struggling with infertility. That is why, in the post, they clearly wrote that they understand these emotions and are sending support. At the same time, Shane does not hide that he expects hate. Some people will still claim that a person with SMA should not be a father. He responds to this in his own style, with humor, calm and concrete plans. He says he will push the baby in a stroller attached to his wheelchair.
